Bath Caddies

Recently, I received a request to machine several batch caddies. Initially, I was unfamiliar with the concept, as I do not typically indulge in such trivial pleasantries. However, I soon found myself immersed in an engaging and exciting project.
The order comprised two distinct types of wood caddies: two made from Ash and five from Kiaat. Ash wood, known for its strength and flexibility, is commonly sourced from Europe and North America. It's a popular choice for its light color and pronounced grain, making it not only durable but also aesthetically pleasing. Kiaat, on the other hand, is an African hardwood known for its rich, reddish-brown hue. It's highly valued for its durability and resistance to termites, making it a luxurious choice for fine woodworking.
Each caddy was designed with a dual-purpose approach. The main feature was a pocket or bowl-like area, machined into the wood using a 22mm bowl router bit with a quatre inch radius. This space was intended for storing various items – from soaps and candles to fine wines, or even a toaster, offering a blend of luxury and utility. The design also included a cavity, perfectly sized to hold a towel, adding a touch of practicality to the sophisticated look.
This project was a delightful journey into the world of caddies, combining the practicality of storage with the austere beauty of fine woodworking. Machining these caddies from Ash and Kiaat not only showcased the unique wood properties, but also and the amount of dust my new 12mm cutting bit makes.
